PAVE July 2025 meeting with Denis Moore

Denis’ talk will outline the rise and fall of the Ottoman Empire, the Balkan Wars and the
circumstances that led to Australia invading Türkiye, the salient features of the Gallipoli
campaign and its legacy.

A little bit about Denis:

Denis was born and grew up in Tasmania. His early  employment was in chartered accountancy, and at that time, he was also active in the CMF, the predecessor to the Army Reserve. In 1965, he was one of a few selected to undergo a pilot scheme to train CMF officers for service in South Vietnam. In 1967-68, as a Captain, he was engaged in active service in South Vietnam as an artillery forward observer in direct support of 2RAR and participated in the Tet Offensive of 1968. He was subsequently granted a commission in the Regular Army, serving in regimental and staff appointments, and as a liaison officer to the
Fleet Air Arm. He was sent to England on full-time study from  1973 to 1975 and retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1987.
 

As a civilian, he was employed in financial and managerial positions until his retirement in 2001. He was a keen private pilot and sailor, and is now an enthusiastic bush walker. In 2021, he was approached to establish the, Victorian-based, Friends of Gallipoli Inc in NSW. The Friends of Gallipoli is a not-for-profit organisation that invokes the mutual respect generated through behaviour with honour in battle between the opposing forces during the The 1915 Gallipoli campaign to promote friendship between the peoples of Australia and Türkiye.

Denis conducts commemorations of the withdrawal from Gallipoli at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park on 20 December each year, this year being, the 110th anniversary of the withdrawal.He also represents and promotes the Friends of Gallipoli at veteran functions, provides talks on the Gallipoli campaign and distributes plaques bearing the 1934 words of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk to leading schools.
